How does the medicine Naproxen make you feel? I just had a D&C surgery yesterday and was prescribed Lortab 5's. I took 2 for the pain and all it did was make me vomit. It never killed the pain. Today my doctor sent for Naproxen. I've never heard of this medicine before. Have any of you ever taken it and know how it makes you feel? I'm hoping for a medicine that will numb me to the pain. Loratabs just didn't work for me.

thedonutkid replied: "Naproxin sodium? as in Aleve? If that is what you mean it sucks. It has never helped me in the slightest but I have never had side effects when using it."

Scott D replied: "Another common name for Naproxen is Sodium Naproxen, which is the key ingredient in Aleve. Naproxen is a step above Ibuprofen but below Codene. Naproxen is a pretty good pain killer without the side effects of nausea as seen with using Codene. It's good. You shouldn't see a problem of nausea."

Jodie B replied: "Naproxyn sodium is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) like ibuprofen or aspirin an is the active ingredient in Naprosyn and Aleve (an OTC version). It helps control swelling from minor injuries and with aches and pains. I've used it for toothaches, in the past, and been VERY pleased. I use it, now that I'm older, for arthritis and wouldn't use anything else. Pay attention to the dosage information, though, and be careful if you have any stomach or other intestinal issues because it can be a little hard on your digestive system."

Az R replied: "Naproxen is a common OTC painkiller like Ibuprofen (advil). In pre ion, it's usually given at a higher strength than what's available OTC. Nausea is a common side effect from lortab (hydrocodone) and all other opiates. You probably vomited up the pills before they made it into circulation, so I wouldn't say that it didn't work. You can try taking just one, possibly with some bland food or soda. It's an extremely potent painkiller, it's just gotta stay down for it to work. Good luck."

shoegal replied: "I have the same problem with pain meds making me vomit, and have taken Naproxyn many times and have been fine. The only thing I would recommend is that you take it with food, because it can be a bit hard on an empty stomach. It works pretty well for surgical pain, and will be much easier to keep down. Feel better soon and good luck! XO"

If naproxen is contraindicated when taking Imitrex(it is), why have they made Treximet, containing naproxen? Treximet is made by the same company that makes Imitrex. A listed contraindicated medication when taking Imitrex is naproxen, but Treximet IS a combination of naproxen and the same medication in Imitrex. Anyone know of the new research that supports the acceptance of this?

mitt0063 replied: "There is no real drug-drug interaction that occurs between Imitrex and Naproxen. Imitrex is designed to prevent vasodilation in the brain, stopping the migraine at its point of development. Most people use Naproxen to treat the pain associated with their migraine headaches, which is no problem. However, taking the two together will not allow you to tell if the Imitrex (which is quite expensive) is working properly at aborting the migraine."

Will naproxen sodium make me drowsy or will it keep me up all night? I have a head ache and am sleepy.

Ames replied: "Neither. Or at least, that has been my experience with it. :o) Avoid medications like Excedrin that have caffeine. I prefer ibuprofen, or Tylenol Rapid Release. If you want headache relief and a sleep aid, try Tylenol PM or equivalents of it."

freshbliss replied: "I've never heard of it doing either. It doesnt reduce pain by affecting the nervous system, but rather the inflammation pathways in the body. You should be just fine....headache aside that is.... Hope you feel better by morning. Be well"

Joey C replied: "Neither... naproxen is so weak it probably wont cure your headache either. Its about as potent as a cup of tea."

what is naproxen sodium, and can i mix it with other pain relievers? i have a killer toothache.... hurts so much i'm having a hard time opening my eyes... which makes driving difficult and my dentist told me to take 2 tylenol and 2 advil every 4 hours.... now i found some ibuprofen, so that covers the advil... but i don't have any acetaminophen, but i did find some naproxen sodium... i just don't want to give myself liver failure or something.

ichabod1971 replied: "Naproxen (INN) (IPA: [nprksn]) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) commonly used for the reduction of high to extreme pain, fever, inflammation and stiffness.. Naproxen and naproxen sodium are marketed under various trade names including: Aleve, Anaprox, Naprogesic, Naprosyn, Naprelan, Synflex. judge it for yourself - I'm not giving medical advice."

RayeKaye replied: "Naproxen sodium (Aleve) is excellent for toothache. When you do combinations of pain relievers for acute pain (like toothache), you hit different pain receptors and have a better chance of reducing the discomfort. First of all - it is safe to take 800 mg of ibuprofen at a time up to 3 times a day for a daily total of 2400 mg. This is the same dose as the pre ion strength motrin. If you increase it to this dose, you will definitely feel better. Ibuprofen is primarily excreted by the kidneys. You can still add the Tylenol if you need to after 2 hours, but it doesn't have anti-inflammatory properties. If you take 2 of the over the counter Aleve (which is roughly the same as the pre ion dose of Anaprox), DON'T repeat it every four hours. This medication is longer lasting, so you can only take it every twelve hours. Please make sure you eat something before taking the higher doses of anti-inflammatories - they tend to tear up an empty stomach. Good luck, and hope you feel better!"

What are the side effects of Naproxen? I have a pinched nerve and my doctor has perscribed Naproxen. Its more potent then OTC Naproxen like Aleve but I was told it isn't dangerous because I'll only be taking it twice a day for 2 weeks at the most. What side effects should I expect? Will it upset my stomach or make me drowsey?

Froggy replied: "it really should not have any more effect on you than OTC Aleve does. If you find it upset your stomach eat it with a meal. ANd it should not make you sleepy."

Venus Goddess of Love replied: "Why don't you try using google to find side effects of naproxen?"

Shannon replied: "Your pre ion Naproxen is the same as Aleve, just a higher dose. It can upset your stomach, it's best to take with food. Make sure you don't take any additional anti-inflammatories (advil, motrin, ibuprofen) with it."

How to treat an allegic reaction to naproxen sodium (aleve)? So, I found out I was allergic to aleve a few months ago when my lips swelled and I broke out in hives. And I've avoided taking it since until yesterday when I took Midol which contained naproxen sodium. Last time I went to the doctor and they gave me a steroid treatment. But I want relief today but my doctor is closed on a sunday! Does benedryl make a difference? I have the tablets and Ive been using ice on my lips. Thanks!

Racheal replied: "Benadryl or call poison control 1800-222-1222, the best thing to do is to go to the ER just in case your throat closes up."

Smilingcheek replied: "Swollen lips indicates a serious reaction, you should at least contact your doctors emergency number to find out what they want you to do. I have an allergy to reglan, and was treated in the hospital for it but then kept on benedryl for a couple of days after the reaction until the drug was out of my bloodstream. Don't hesitate to go to the ER if you feel any kind of throat tightening... good luck."

is naproxen sodium the same as ibuprofen? I was just curious if anyone knew if naproxen sodium is the same as ibuprofen or motrin. I want to make sure of side effects before I take anything.

georgygirl replied: "no, it is not the same, though both are non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs. You should not be dosing yourself....ask your doctor or pharmacist...they can check any side effects, or any contra-indications or drug interactions. Play it safe!"

Toad replied: "No! naproxen is Aleve. Ibuprofen is Advil Ibuprofen is also Motrin. When I take Ibuprofen I never notice any side effects but, naproxen makes my stomach hurt sometimes."

naproxen and stomach bleeding? i am taking naproxen for an inflammed tendon in my knee and my friends girlfriend (know it all) is telling me that naproxen makes your stomach bleed every time you take it... i am unable to find anything addressing this question and only find that "it may cause stomach bleeding". Can someone find if it makes your stomach bleed, EVERY time?

slw182 replied: "I don't know for sure but i highly doubt it. I have taken naproxen A LOT and my stomach is fine. Ask the doctor who prescribed it to you."

gdev82 replied: "No, naproxen has a POSSIBLE side effect of stomache ulceration and bleeding. Take it with meals to decrease GI irritation. Don't take it if you have an ulcer."

Katie W replied: "The possibility is there if there is a warning on the label. That does not necessarily mean YOU will have bleeding. Take Prilosec OTC with the naproxen. The prilosec will counteract that reaction. I am surprised your doctor did not prescribe it to you with the naproxen. Always, when in doubt about a drug or drug interactions, ask your pharmasist."

mompoo replied: "No, that is not necessarily true. Don't take more than the recommended dosage though, as it can cause stomach bleeds. If you are in that much pain that you need to take for an extended amount of time, or you feel you need more than the recommende dosage, you should see a dr."

angelicahevenly replied: "that can be a side affect if abused just take it with food as directed you should be fine xoxo"

Any pharmacy person who knows about Naproxen dosing here? I have been having pelvic pain and am scheduled for a workup on Monday. I have discovered Naproxen is a great drug to treat this agonizing pelvic pain which is making my life pretty misreable now. I always take it with food and drink plenty of liquids. My question is how much is the Naproxen max dose q 24 hours? Does it have long term side effects? Can I take 400 mg bid for a couple of months without it affecting me. I think I have adenomyosis and thats why its so effective in treating my pelvic pain. Do you know anything about Naproxen max dose q 24 hrs? What is it?

SZO replied: "You can take 250-500 mg orally twice daily for your pain. Maximum daily dose is 1375 mg. Long term side effects are gastric ulceration, congenital heart failure & kidney disease. For the adenomyosis, you have to confirm this with your doctor for proper treatment. Although analgesics may help with the pain, you can't keep on taking medications for a long time. So far, hysterectomy is the only permanent cure option."
